Bamako: The Mali Climate Fund, the first national climate fund established in Africa following the Durban COP17 meeting, was signed between the Government of the Republic of Mali and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that will provisionally administer the Fund until a national successor is identified. The agreement was signed in Bamako by H.E. Mr. Soumeylou Boubèye Maiga, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Mr. Bisrat Aklilu, Executive Coordinator, UNDP Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office (MPTF Office).  

The signature ceremony was attended by Professor Tiémoko Sangaré, Minister of Environment and Sanitation, the Budget Minister, the Ambassador of Denmark (Chair of the Mali Donors Group and incoming European Group rotating Presidency), the Ambassador of Sweden (Chair of the Mali Environment Donors Group), the UN Resident Coordinator a.i., the UNDP Resident Representative a.i., members of the Mali Climate Committee and other invited guests.

The Malian economy depends heavily on its natural resources which are being adversely affected by climate change thereby stifling its economic development prospects. To respond to this challenge, the Government of Mali developed a ‘Strategy for a Green Economy and Climate Resilience’ with the aim of promoting a green economy that is resilient to climate change and will advance economic growth and poverty reduction. The Mali Climate Fund will support and finance the Mali’s climate resilient multi-sectoral investment programmes.

The Mali Climate Fund will be used to mobilize, blend and utilize domestic and international, public and private, sources of finance towards the financing of the ambitious goals of the Green Economy and Climate Resilient strategy. It will also contribute to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals whose achievement is negatively influenced by climate change.
